Our Heritage
Our academy is built on the rich lineage of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, passed down from the pioneers of the sport. From Mitsuyo Maeda to Ryan Thomas, we uphold the traditions of discipline, respect, and mastery.
Mitsuyo Maeda
Mitsuyo Maeda, also known as Count Koma, was a Japanese judoka who played a crucial role in spreading judo to Brazil. Maeda's teachings and techniques were adapted and refined by the Gracie family, leading to the evolution of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Carlos Gracie
Carlos Gracie played a pivitol role in the development of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He learned the art from Maeda, and along with his brothers, further refined and promoted it as an effective self defense system.
Carlson Gracie
Carlson Gracie is renowned as a top figure in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, excelling as both a competitor and coach. He opened the famous Carlson Gracie Academy where he started the first group classes in Jiu-Jitsu (previously only taught in a one-on-one basis), he also opened the doors of his gym to the lower classes, and allowed students to train without paying, asking in return full commitment and to step up in competitions. In the process, Carlson assembled one of the greatest teams that ever competed.
Ricardo Liborio
A 7th-degree Coral Belt and widely regarded in BJJ as the top black belt ever produced by Carlson Gracie, and an all around legend of the sport. As a competitor, he achieved success at various prestigious tournaments. Liborio's impact as a coach is profound, having mentored numerous MMA champions. His technical knowledge, leadership, and dedication to teaching have made him a highly respected figure in the martial arts community.
Ryan Thomas
A professional MMA fighter and 1st-degree black belt under Ricardo Liborio. As a fighter, he has competed in various organizations all the way up to the UFC and claimed multiple championships along the way. Drawing on his strong lineage, Ryan now imparts his knowledge at his own academy, right here in Danville, Illinois.
